Streetworks In 2009 I began a series of drawings on polythene of local people who use a shopping area in Mare street, Hackney, which is close to where I live and work. I am well aware of the evident contrast between Mare Street and other more abundantly affluent shopping areas around London. People shopping on the Narrow Way are from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and while their interior lives are unknown to me, in my drawings I try to capture something of their vivid individuality both imaginatively and from observation.
Individual drawings can be juxtaposed to create new narratives..Some of the drawings are concluded rapidly; others have been changed later when hung with another drawing or within in an installation group.
In the 1950s I grew up in a similarly poorer area in Leicester and my drawings contain echoes of the local people I knew back then and the powerful emotional memories that remain, even though details have been lost in time.
